The UILO is responsible for managing research projects with legal terms and conditions in the form of contractual deliverables or intellectual property terms made with government ministries or agencies and non-profit organizations (including educational institutions). These differ from grants which require only a report at the end of a project.
Government and non-profit contracts and agreements may be in the form of collaborative research agreements, service contracts, and data sharing agreements.
In 2008, the UILO was involved in producing the Research Relationships document and Tool Kit which has simplified and greatly reduced the time required in establishing research agreements with the BC Provincial Ministries.
